Huntingdon, from just across the bridge.
We are based in Godmanchester, a few minutes over the medieval bridge, which makes Huntingdon about as local as work gets for us. From the Georgian townhouses around the High Street to the family homes of Stukeley Meadows, Hinchingbrooke and Oxmoor, we look after them all the same way: properly.
We are on the wrong side of the bridge, which is the right side
Four minutes over the old bridge from Godmanchester and we are in Huntingdon, which is why more of our work happens here than anywhere else. We are in and out of the town most weeks, and after a while you stop seeing it as a place and start seeing it as a set of houses you know the shape of.
Cromwell went to the grammar school on the High Street and the Georgian fronts still run down towards the market, though you forget all that until you are up a ladder on one of them, working out how many coats of paint are between you and the original timber. The answer is usually more than you hoped.
Being this close changes what is practical. A second opinion on the way past. A small job done before it grows into a proper one. A visit slotted round your day instead of a route plan, because there is no route plan. That is the real advantage of being local, and it is worth more than any of the history.
The Georgian and Victorian centre
Sash windows that have been painted shut, lime plaster that hates modern filler, and damp usually blamed on the walls when it is actually a raised path or a hundred years of pointing. Old buildings are not difficult, they are just different, and they punish shortcuts.
The post-war estates
Oxmoor, Stukeley Meadows and their neighbours: solid houses now at the age where the timber windows fitted in the eighties are giving up, lofts want boarding properly above the insulation, and a room refresh transforms the place for a fraction of moving.
The new developments
Handsome from the road, and full of small things the builder rushed: sealant that failed in the first winter, doors that were never adjusted, a garden left as a rectangle of turf. None of it is serious. All of it is annoying, and all of it is a morning's work.

It is really one service, offered at whatever size the house needs. A single sticking door is the small version. A room taken from tired to finished is the usual one, and we call that the Room Refresh. A whole property between tenants is the large one.
