Straight answers.

The questions people actually ask before letting somebody into their home, answered plainly and without the hedging. If yours is not here, ask us and you will get the same sort of answer back, usually the same evening.

Money

Pricing, deposits and paying

How do you price work?

Every job is quoted as a fixed price in writing before we start, and the price does not move unless the scope does. We never charge by the hour, because hourly billing rewards slowness and punishes tidiness, and it leaves you watching the clock instead of the work. There are no call-out fees.

Are your prices published anywhere?

Yes, nearly all of them. There are over 300 published prices on our guide prices page, taken straight from the rate card we quote from. Almost nobody in this trade publishes numbers and we have never understood why.

Read them as the shape of things rather than as a quote. Where a job genuinely varies with the size of the room we publish a range rather than pretend otherwise, and full kitchen and bathroom refits are the one thing we will not put a single number against, because they vary too much to quote honestly from a website.

What does a typical job cost?

Every home is different, so treat these as orientation rather than quotes.

A half-day visit working through a list of small repairs is usually £150 to £350. Decorating a typical bedroom is around £700 to £1,100 including woodwork. A full Room Refresh generally lands between £1,000 and £2,000 depending on the room. Larger projects, such as a stove installation with all the building work, are usually £2,500 upwards.

We publish an indicative price list covering almost everything we do, which is unusual in this trade and saves everyone a phone call. Full kitchen and bathroom refits are the one thing we will not put a single number against, because they vary too much to quote honestly from a website. There is a realistic range on the Room Refresh page instead.

Do you take a deposit?

Not for jobs under £750, where you simply pay on completion. At £750 and above we ask for a 25 per cent deposit to confirm the booking and hold your dates. Projects over £2,500 are set out as staged payments tied to milestones, so you are never paying far ahead of the work. Special-order or non-returnable materials are paid for before we order them, and we always tell you which items those are.

How do I pay?

Bank transfer, card or cash, all through our Revolut Pro business account, with details confirmed on the invoice. For card we send you a secure payment link that goes straight to the account, so we never handle or see your card details. Cash is welcome on the smaller jobs if you prefer it. Invoices are payable within seven days.

Are you VAT registered?

Not currently, so no VAT is charged and none appears on quotes or invoices. If that changes we will tell you before it affects any quote you hold.

Are you a limited company?

No. This is a self-employed business, run the way most trades of this size are run. We handle our own tax and National Insurance, so you are not taking anybody on as an employee by booking us, and we are not registered for VAT. If any of that changes as we grow we will say so here first.

What about materials?

Everyday sundries such as filler, sealant, fixings, sandpaper and basic white paints are already inside our prices and never itemised. Materials bought specifically for your job are itemised at cost plus a small handling charge covering collection, storage and wastage, shown plainly in the quote.

Is there a minimum charge?

Coming to look at something so we can price it is free, always, whether or not you go ahead. There are no call-out fees and never have been.

The minimum is about doing work rather than turning up. A visit where we actually do something has a minimum of around £110, because a van, the travelling and an hour of the diary cost the same whether the job takes ten minutes or three hours. We will tell you when something falls under it, and usually suggest saving it up alongside another job rather than paying the minimum for the sake of it.

The one visit we do charge for is the Home Health Check, and that is because you are commissioning a written survey rather than asking us to quote.

Trust

Insurance, guarantees and limits

Are you insured, and is the work guaranteed?

Yes to both. We hold public liability insurance appropriate to the work we do, with details available on request. If anything goes wrong as a result of our workmanship within twelve months of the work being finished, ring us and we will come back and put it right at no cost to you. It does not cover fair wear and tear, accidental damage, or a product failing under its own manufacturer’s warranty, and it is our own promise rather than an insurance-backed warranty.

What will you not take on?

Regulated work. Gas belongs with Gas Safe registered engineers, notifiable electrical work with NICEIC or NAPIT registered electricians, unvented cylinders with someone G3 qualified, stove commissioning with HETAS registered installers, and large or hazardous tree work with a qualified tree surgeon. We say so plainly rather than having a go, and we bring in specialists from our trusted network, coordinated by us, so you still have one conversation to manage.

And once you have met them, they are yours: take the number and ring them directly next time. We have no interest in sitting in the middle of a relationship that works.

Can I trust you with a key?

Fair question, and one most people are too polite to ask. We hold a Basic DBS check and will show you the certificate whenever you like, which is more than most trades can say and takes about ten seconds. Beyond the paperwork: keys are logged, never labelled with an address, kept secure rather than left in a van, and handed back or destroyed the moment an arrangement ends. If you would rather use a key safe, that suits us just as well.

Who actually turns up?

One of us. We are a small, family-run business rather than a firm with a rota, so the person at your door is somebody who was taught to work the way we work, and the person who quoted is never a stranger to the job. Where a registered specialist is needed for part of it, you will know who they are and why they are there before they arrive.

What if I am not happy with something?

Tell us, and quickly. We would far rather hear about a problem than have you live with it politely. Concerns are acknowledged within one working day and put right promptly. Nothing in our terms affects your statutory rights.

Practicalities

Timing, visits and how it works

How quickly do you reply, and how far ahead are you booked?

Enquiries get a reply within one working day, usually sooner. Small jobs can often be fitted within a week or two; larger projects and Room Refreshes are typically a few weeks ahead. If something is genuinely urgent, say so and we will tell you whether we can help rather than promising and disappointing.

Will you quote without coming to see it?

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on the job. A curtain pole, a stair gate, a lock changed or a fence panel re-fixed we can usually price from a description and a photograph, and it would be silly to make you wait a week for a visit to tell you something we already know.

Anything larger gets a proper look first. A photograph cannot show us what is behind the plaster, whether the floor is level, how the light falls, or the three other things in the room you have stopped noticing. Quoting blind from a picture is how jobs end up with a price that moves halfway through, and since our whole promise is that the price does not move, we would rather spend half an hour looking than put you through that.

The visit costs you nothing and commits you to nothing. If we think the honest answer is to leave it alone, that is what we will tell you, and you will not hear from us again unless you get in touch.

What happens on a first visit?

We walk the space together and talk about what needs doing now, what can safely wait and what is best left alone entirely. You get a written price afterwards with no obligation. Sometimes the most valuable thing we say is leave it for now, and that advice is free.

Do I need to be there while you work?

Not usually, once we have met and agreed the job. Many customers give us access arrangements and come home to a finished room. Whatever suits you: some like to be around, some would rather the house simply be quietly improved while they are out.

What about mess?

Dust sheets always, tidy habits throughout, and the space left clean at the end of each day rather than only at the end of the job. Cleaning up properly is part of the work, not an optional extra.

Can I just have one small thing done?

Yes, and it happens constantly. The named services on this site are starting points rather than a menu, and they can be combined, split apart or reduced to the single job you actually want. A curtain pole, a patched wall or a sticking door is a perfectly good reason to ring. The only practical limit is the minimum visit charge, which is why most people save up a short list and have it all done at once.

Can you do everything on my list in one visit?

That is exactly how we like to work, and it is almost always better value than calling somebody out three times. Send the whole list, however long, and we will tell you what fits into a visit and what needs its own day.

Are you on Facebook or Instagram?

No. Not really as a business decision either: Ian is not on social media himself, and running an account he would never open seems a poor way to be reachable.

If you are after recent work and what other people say about it, both sit on our Google listing, and the reviews here are the same words with more room to breathe. To actually get hold of us, the phone number and email at the bottom of this page are read by the person who would turn up.

Do you work outside Huntingdonshire?

Sometimes, for the right job. Godmanchester, Huntingdon, St Ives, Brampton, Buckden, St Neots, Papworth and the Cambridgeshire villages are the comfortable patch. A little outside it, ask anyway, and if we cannot help we will say so and point you towards someone who can.

Question not answered here?

Ring, email or send the form. You will get a straight answer and no sales patter, whether or not the job turns out to be one for us.
